
<p>The Rajya Sabha (Council of States) session was adjourned on Thursday within 15 minutes of its commencement following disruptions by opposition parties over issues such as the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, US tariffs, crimes against women, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar. The uproar prevented the Zero Hour from taking place. Opposition MPs demanded a discussion under Rule 267 on these issues and resorted to vociferous protests when their demand was not met.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">House Proceedings Adjourned Twice</h2>



<p>Due to continuous disruptions and sloganeering, the House proceedings were adjourned until 12 noon. However, the situation did not improve, leading to a further adjournment until 2 pm. Upon commencement of the Rajya Sabha proceedings, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh informed the House that 28 opposition MPs had submitted notices under Rule 267 seeking discussions on various issues. This rule allows for the suspension of all other business to discuss the specified topics, culminating in a vote.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">MPs Raise Demands</h2>



<p>Opposition MPs demanded immediate discussions on issues including the SIR, the adverse effects of the 25% tariff and penalties imposed by the US on India, the harassment of women and children in Odisha, the ill-treatment of Bengali workers in other states, the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh, and the sudden resignation of Vice President Dhankhar. This demand was raised by several opposition MPs, including Sultana Dev, Shubhasis Khutia, Sasmit Patra, Renuka Chowdhury, Neeraj Dangi, Rajiv Shukla, Saket Gokhale, Santosh Kumar P, V. Sivadasan, and Trinamool Congress MPs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Deputy Chairman Rejects Demands</h2>



<p>The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha rejected all the demands for discussion. He stated that these notices did not conform to the previously established procedures of the Chair and therefore could not be accepted. Following the Deputy Chairman&#8217;s refusal to allow the discussion, opposition MPs began sloganeering and rose from their seats, leading to the adjournment of the House proceedings, first until 12 noon and then until 2 pm.</p>

Trump&#39;s big tariff move for Pakistan sparks questions over India pressure strategy


<p>In a move seemingly designed to pressure India, US President Donald Trump has shown leniency towards Pakistan by reducing tariffs on Pakistani goods. The US previously imposed a 29 per cent tariff on goods from Pakistan, which has now been lowered to 19 per cent.</p>



<p>Conversely, the US has announced a 25 per cent tariff on goods imported from India (भारत), expected to come into effect next week.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">41 Per cent Tariff on Syria</h2>



<p>Trump&#8217;s new order imposes a 41 per cent tariff on Syrian goods, 35 per cent on Canadian goods, 50 per cent on Brazilian imports, 25 per cent on Indian goods, 20 per cent on goods imported from Taiwan, and 39 per cent on goods from Switzerland.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, a Trump administration official stated that negotiations on trade agreements with several countries are ongoing, suggesting further tariff announcements may be forthcoming.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that Canada&#8217;s tariff has also been increased by 10 percentage points, rising from 25 percent to 35 percent. This is likely to significantly impact Canada&#8217;s export business.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lowest Tariffs for Brazil and Britain</h2>



<p>The lowest tariffs, set at 10 percent, have been imposed on Brazil and Britain. While Trump had previously threatened a 50 percent tariff on Brazil, he ultimately granted significant relief.</p>



<p>Furthermore, with ongoing negotiations between the US and China, a temporary 30 per cent tariff remains in place. Trump may make a major decision regarding China after August 12th.</p>



<p>Currently, Trump&#8217;s stance towards India remains firm. The US contends that India continues to trade with Russia despite repeated warnings. By purchasing oil from Russia, India is perceived as strengthening Moscow&#8217;s position against Ukraine, prompting repeated warnings from the US. The Indian government has responded to these threats.</p>

<p>Torrential rainfall in Rajasthan has caused widespread disruption. Many districts are facing flood-like situations, with roads and homes submerged.</p>



<p>Water levels in most dams have reached near-critical levels. Many routes are blocked, and school closures due to flooding have impacted students&#8217; education.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Schools Closed on 1st and 2nd August</h2>



<p>In view of the situation, schools in several districts have been declared closed on 1st and 2nd August. Government and private schools, Anganwadis, and coaching institutes in Ajmer, Bundi, Bikaner, Nagaur, Didwana-Kuchaman, Jaisalmer, and Dholpur will remain closed due to heavy rainfall warnings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Teachers and Staff to Remain Present</h2>



<p>In Ajmer, District Collector Lok Bandhu has ordered the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres on 1st August. However, teachers and staff have been instructed to remain present at their designated times. In Bundi, schools will remain closed for students from classes 1 to 12 until 2nd August.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Administrative Confusion Regarding Closure</h2>



<p>However, administrative confusion regarding school closures has also emerged. The authority to close government schools has been delegated to the respective CBEOs (Cluster Block Education Officers), but the lack of clear instructions regarding private schools has created uncertainty. Some private schools have announced closures independently, leading to confusion among parents.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Building Survey Underway in Jaisalmer</h2>



<p>In Jaisalmer district, the holiday period for students has been extended due to safety inspections of school buildings. The district administration has decided to keep all government and non-government schools and Anganwadi centres closed for students until 2nd August.</p>



<p>According to the order issued by the district administration, the inspection of the structural condition of buildings, the need for repairs, and other safety aspects is currently underway. This decision has been taken to avoid putting children at risk. However, all teaching and non-teaching staff have been instructed to remain present at schools and Anganwadi centres as per their departmental timings.</p>



<p>A warning has also been issued of disciplinary action against the relevant government and non-government educational institutions that fail to comply with the order. It is noteworthy that this holiday was initially announced from 29th to 31st July and has now been extended to 2nd August.</p>

<p>The floods in and around Beijing have claimed the lives of 60 people so far. Approximately 31 of these were residents of an elderly care home in a Beijing suburb. The death toll in Beijing stands at 44, while 16 deaths have been reported in the neighbouring Hebei province.</p>

<p><strong>LPG Cylinder Price:</strong> A significant relief from inflation has arrived on the first day of the month. State-owned oil companies have reduced the prices of LPG cylinders. However, this reduction applies only to commercial gas cylinders, used in restaurants, hotels, and wedding/party functions. The price of commercial gas cylinders has been reduced by ₹33.50. The new rates came into effect today, August 1st.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are the new prices?</h2>



<p>While the prices of 19 kg LPG cylinders have decreased, there has been no change in the price of 14 kg domestic LPG cylinders. With the new rates, a 19 kg LPG cylinder will now cost ₹1,631.50 in Delhi, down from ₹1,665. Similarly, commercial gas cylinder prices have decreased across the country. In Kolkata, the new price is ₹1,734.50. In Mumbai, it is ₹1,582.50, and in Chennai, it is ₹1,789. The reduction in the price of 19 kg gas cylinders has provided significant relief to small businesses and confectioners in the food industry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Domestic LPG Cylinder Prices Unchanged for the Past 4 Months</h2>



<p>State-owned oil companies have not changed the price of 14.3 kg domestic LPG cylinders for the past four months. The last price change for domestic LPG cylinders occurred on 8 April 2025. Since then, prices have remained unchanged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Current Cooking Gas Cylinder Prices</h2>



<p>Currently, a domestic cooking gas cylinder costs ₹853 in Delhi. In Mumbai, it costs ₹852.50, in Lucknow ₹890.50, in Patna ₹942.50, in Hyderabad ₹905, in Indore ₹881, and in Ghaziabad ₹850.50.</p>

<p>India&#8217;s assistant coach, Ryan Ten Doeschate, has explained Jasprit Bumrah&#8217;s absence from the fifth and final Test match. He stated that the team management respected Bumrah&#8217;s wishes and believed that limiting him to three matches was the right decision, prioritising his long-term future over a single Test.</p>



<p>Jasprit Bumrah completed his pre-determined participation of three matches in the Manchester Test. The Indian team management decided against risking the star pacer in the fifth and final Test. Speaking to reporters after the end of play on the first day of the fifth Test, Ryan Ten Doeschate described Bumrah&#8217;s situation as complex. He explained that while the team wanted to include him, his health was prioritised, leading to the decision to rest him for the final Test.</p>



<p>Ten Doeschate highlighted Bumrah&#8217;s significant workload across the three Tests, despite bowling only in one innings in Manchester. He mentioned Bumrah&#8217;s prior commitment to playing three matches and the team&#8217;s decision to respect this, managing his workload accordingly by excluding him from the fifth Test. No precise scientific basis was used to determine which matches Bumrah would be rested for in the five-match series.</p>



<p>He acknowledged the surprise among players regarding Bumrah&#8217;s exclusion from the fifth Test. Despite the expected bounce at the Oval, the pitch was considered good for batting. The team opted to take a calculated risk, planning to bowl first if they won the toss.</p>



<p>Ten Doeschate addressed potential criticism, stating, &#8220;You could say he should have played here, but if we&#8217;d been 3-1 down, you&#8217;d also be saying we didn&#8217;t use him there, so it&#8217;s not about speculation, it&#8217;s about looking to the future. We have to consider how to manage this. Perhaps England made the right decision to leave their best bowling wicket for the last Test, as he&#8217;s played three Tests already.&#8221;</p>



<p>The assistant coach also refuted suggestions that Bumrah was selectively playing matches due to his injury history and back surgery. He stated, “I don’t think it’s a fair comment to say Bumrah was picking and choosing games. He said he would play three matches, but he left it to us which three matches he would play. We’ve tried to manage the situation. I think it’s important to look after players, especially when you’re playing with 18 players.”</p>

Registered Post Service to be Discontinued from September 1st


<p><strong>Registered Post:</strong> The Indian Postal Department has decided to discontinue the registered post service, which has been in operation since the British era, and merge it with the speed post service. The postal department has sent a circular to postmasters across the country instructing them to complete all necessary revisions by 31 July, so that registered post can be discontinued from 1 September 2025. <p><strong>Patna Crime News</strong> On Thursday, criminals in Patna burned two innocent children alive. The victims have been identified as siblings. Their mother works as a security guard at AIIMS, while their father previously held a private job in the Secretariat. Their ages are reported to be between 10 and 15 years. The police are currently investigating the matter, and no leads have been found yet. According to the police, only the siblings were at home at the time of the incident. They had returned from school a short while before.</p>

<p>Angry residents blocked roads in protest, but the police managed to calm them down. Whether this is murder or an accident is currently under police investigation.</p>

<p>The deceased father, Lalan Gupta, while giving details of the incident, said, “I was at work. My wife informed me of the incident around 2:30 am. When I reached home, I was shocked by the sight. Two or three people committed this crime.” He added, “If there had been a fire, the child would have screamed and struggled, but nothing like that happened. They were murdered and then burned.”</p>

<p>Following the receipt of information about the incident, the police are investigating the matter. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team also examined the scene. The FSL team is investigating the cause of the fire.</p>

<p>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Rajasthan following widespread rainfall across the state. Light to moderate rain was recorded in most parts of eastern Rajasthan, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas. </p>



<p>Western Rajasthan also experienced light to moderate rainfall, with heavy showers in isolated locations. The highest rainfall was recorded in Shahpura, Jaipur, at 156 millimetres. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Ganganagar at 37.0 degrees Celsius, and the lowest minimum temperature was recorded in Sirohi at 20.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD has forecast further rainfall for the next 48 hours.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Orange Alert in 6 Districts</h2>



<p>The IMD has issued an orange alert for Ajmer, Jaipur, Sikar, Churu, Nagaur, and Pali districts, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning.</p>



<p>A yellow alert has been issued for Alwar, Bhilwara, Bundi, Dausa, Jhunjhunu, Kota, Rajsamand, Tonk, Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Jodhpur, and Sri Ganganagar, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tomorrow&#8217;s Forecast</h2>



<p>The IMD has issued a yellow alert for eight districts for tomorrow, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Ajmer, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, Nagaur, and Sri Ganganagar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">IMD Forecast</h2>



<p>According to the IMD, a circulation system persists over Madhya Pradesh and adjoining eastern Rajasthan, leading to the ongoing heavy rainfall. However, there is a strong possibility of relief from heavy rainfall from August 1st. However, some parts of the Shekhawati region and Bikaner division may still experience isolated heavy rainfall on August 1st.</p>
