
<p>The Maharashtra government has announced a significant initiative for the people of the state during Ganeshotsav. In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday, the Nagpur-Gondia Expressway project was approved. The government claims that upon completion, travel time between the two cities will reduce from three hours to just 75 minutes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">₹3162 Crore for Land Acquisition</h2>



<p>The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporations has been entrusted with the construction of this 162.5-kilometre-long expressway. Administrative approval has been granted for land acquisition, with a budget of ₹3162.18 crore allocated. A separate budget will be provided for construction work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Current Travel Time: Three Hours </h2>



<p>The Chief Minister&#8217;s Office (CMO) stated that this route will directly benefit approximately 10 talukas and 115 villages across Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia districts. Furthermore, this expressway will connect major cities like Nagpur and Mumbai to underdeveloped and tribal-dominated regions.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">78 Bridges, Interchanges at Key Locations</h2>



<p>The Nagpur-Gondia Expressway project includes 26 flyovers, 8 underpasses for animals, 15 major and 63 minor bridges, and 71 canal crossings. Interchanges will be constructed at 8 locations: Gavsi, Pachgaon, Thana, Rotary, Panjara, Paldongri, Lohari, and Savari.</p>



<p>The government anticipates that this 162.577 km project will not only expedite and simplify travel but also pave the way for socio-economic development in the region. The expressway is expected to boost new industries, accelerate local development, and create new employment opportunities for young people.</p>

<p><strong>Voter Adhikar Yatra</strong>: The countdown to the Bihar Assembly elections has begun. Although the date hasn&#8217;t been officially announced, it&#8217;s expected to be declared in the first week of October. The opposition has taken to the streets, focusing on voter list revision to improve their chances in the upcoming election. This has sparked a political uproar across Bihar and the entire country, with the opposition launching attacks on this issue from Parliament to the streets. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, have been undertaking the &#8216;Voter Adhikar Yatra&#8217; across Bihar for the past 14 days, engaging with the public and highlighting irregularities in the voter lists.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Akhilesh Yadav to Participate from Chhapra to Ara</h2>



<p>This Yatra is now in its final leg. To bolster the campaign, Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party (SP), the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh, joined the Yatra today. Akhilesh Yadav has joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in this Yatra. Akhilesh Yadav will participate in the Yatra from Chhapra to Ara, after which he will return to Uttar Pradesh. Political analysts suggest that Akhilesh Yadav&#8217;s inclusion in the Yatra is part of a specific strategy in view of the Bihar Assembly elections.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Benefits of Akhilesh&#8217;s Participation</h2>



<p>By including Akhilesh Yadav, the Mahagatbandhan (grand alliance) constituent parties aim to consolidate their Muslim-Yadav (M-Y) equation in Bihar. This is also seen as an attempt to transform it into a P-D-A (backward, Dalit, and minority) equation. Furthermore, Rahul Gandhi, by including the SP leader, hopes to appeal to voters in the border regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The areas where Akhilesh Yadav joined the Voter Adhikar Yatra are Saran and Bhojpur, both bordering Ballia. The border regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh share deep linguistic, cultural, and social ties, with strong familial connections. This is clearly reflected in the politics of these areas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Attempting to Replicate 2020 Performance</h2>



<p>The Mahagatbandhan aims to replicate its performance in the 2020 Assembly elections. In the previous Bihar Assembly elections, the Mahagatbandhan won six out of eight seats in Siwan district, seven out of ten in Saran district, and five out of seven in Bhojpur district. The Mahagatbandhan seeks to repeat this success. This time, the opposition Mahagatbandhan in Bihar appears to be employing a different pre-election strategy. The Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav Voter Adhikar Yatra reflects a micro-level election strategy, with careful consideration given to which leader participates where. The Mahagatbandhan strategically chose areas where the SP holds influence for Akhilesh&#8217;s participation. Similarly, Priyanka Gandhi joined the Yatra in the Mithilanchal region, performing a puja at the Janaki temple – an area considered a BJP stronghold.</p>

<p><strong>Trump Tariff:</strong> A US appeals court has ruled most of Trump&#8217;s tariffs illegal. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit stated that even though the US President has emergency powers, he cannot use these powers to impose tariffs. According to the Associated Press, the court ordered the tariffs to remain in place until 14 October. This appeals court decision gives the Trump administration time to take the case to the Supreme Court.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Donald Trump Frustrated After Court Ruling</h2>



<p>President Donald Trump was frustrated after the appeals court ruling. He rejected the court order outright, stating that all tariffs would remain in effect. He called the court&#8217;s decision biased, claiming that if it were allowed to stand, it would ruin America. He stated that they would use tariffs in the best interests of their nation with the help of the Supreme Court.</p>



<p>Trump wrote on Truth Social that all tariffs are in effect. He stated that the appeals court&#8217;s decision to remove all tariffs is wrong, but he knows that America will ultimately win. He claimed that removing these tariffs would be a major disaster for the country. America will no longer tolerate massive trade deficits and unfair tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers imposed by other countries, whether friend or foe. He stated that this deficit negatively impacts American farmers and producers. President Donald Trump said that tariffs are the best way to support companies that make great Made in America products. This decision relates to reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on China, Canada, and Mexico in February.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">50% Tariff on India Imposed from 27 August</h2>



<p>Trump had announced a 25 per cent reciprocal tariff on India, which came into effect on 7 August, subsequently extending to approximately 70 other countries. On 7 August, the US President announced that he would double the tariff on Indian goods to 50 per cent in response to India&#8217;s purchase of Russian crude oil.</p>

<p>A powerful explosion at a rented house in Kannur, Kerala, on Saturday morning resulted in one death and several injuries. The blast, suspected to be caused by a homemade bomb, was so intense that the victim&#8217;s body was reportedly dismembered, with remains scattered across the scene.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">House Reduced to Rubble</h2>



<p>Eyewitnesses described the house as being completely destroyed by the blast. Several nearby houses also suffered damage. Police suspect the explosion may have been accidental, occurring during the construction of a homemade bomb. The house owner, Keezhara Govindan, had leased the property to two individuals operating a spare parts shop in Payyannur, approximately 40 kilometres from Kannur.</p>



<p>The identities of the deceased and injured remain unconfirmed. The exact number of people present in the house at the time of the blast is also unknown. The impact of the explosion caused damage to surrounding houses, with walls collapsing and doors being ripped off their hinges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Forensic Team at the Scene</h2>



<p>Forensic experts and a bomb disposal squad are at the scene collecting evidence and investigating the circumstances. The homemade bomb explosion has once again highlighted the persistent issue of illegal bomb-making in Kannur district. The area has a history of such incidents, often with political undertones.</p>



<p>In April 2024, a worker of the ruling Marxist Communist Party (CPI(M)) was killed while collecting explosives in a similar homemade bomb explosion in Panur. In the same year, a 90-year-old individual in Thalassery died after accidentally picking up a steel bomb found on a deserted plot of land.</p>

<p><strong>Jaipur:</strong> Rajasthan&#8217;s Chief Secretary, Sudhanshu Pant, stated that the country has placed special emphasis on urban development and urban infrastructure over the past 10 years. He highlighted Rajasthan&#8217;s immense potential, with its Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities rapidly developing, positioning the state to become a hub for investment and urban development. These remarks were made during the National Convention of NAREDCO.</p>



<p>He further explained that Rajasthan benefits significantly from its geographical location, connecting the NCR to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with approximately 40% of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor passing through the state. <p>The recently commenced Phase-2 of the Jaipur Metro, incorporating the expertise of DMRC on the advice of Mahua, was also discussed. He mentioned policies like the Rajasthan Township Policy 2025 and Model Building Bylaws 2025, which offer high FAR and simplified approval processes. The state government is actively working to establish Bhiwadi as a strong alternative to Gurugram-Manesar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Proposed High-Tech and IT City</h2>



<p>A high-tech city and an IT city spanning over 500 hectares are proposed in the capital city, Jaipur. Pant assured that the Rajasthan government welcomes investment, simplifying processes and committing to making investments secure and profitable. NAREDCO President, G. Hari Babu, commended the government&#8217;s efforts in strengthening the housing and infrastructure sectors, describing them as twin engines of growth.</p>

<p>According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the National Museum of Australia purchased Sir Don Bradman&#8217;s historic cap for AU$438,500 (approximately ₹2.52 crore). Half of this amount was contributed by the Australian Federal Government. Bradman wore this cap while captaining the Australian team during the 1946-47 Ashes series. This series was significant as it was the first Test series played against England after World War II. Australia performed brilliantly, winning the series 3-0.</p>

<p>The Maharashtra government is considering extending working hours and amending labour laws. A recent cabinet meeting saw the Labour Department propose an increase in working hours from 9 to 10 hours per day. The proposal also includes allowing women to work night shifts.</p>



<p>Labour Minister Akash Fundkar clarified that discussions are only preliminary and no final decision has been made. However, the proposal is expected to spark debate.</p>



<p>If implemented, the changes would affect employees in the private sector. Currently, Maharashtra has a nine-hour workday regulation. To extend this to ten hours, the government would need to amend the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017. This act governs working hours and employment conditions in shops, hotels, entertainment centres, and private businesses. Currently, it applies to establishments with 10 or more employees.</p>



<p>While the government&#8217;s stance remains unclear, discussions are intensifying among workers and labour unions.</p>



<p>The changes could impact employee duty schedules, overtime regulations, and workplace flexibility in the state&#8217;s private businesses.</p>



<p>The government is also considering increasing permissible overtime hours. Currently, employees can work a maximum of 125 overtime hours in a three-month period. The new proposal suggests increasing this to 144 hours. Furthermore, the proposal emphasizes mandatory breaks during continuous work to prevent employee fatigue and workplace stress.</p>

<p>In another post, Sreesanth&#8217;s wife described the impact of the video&#8217;s release on her family. She stated: &#8220;@sreesanthnair36 has rebuilt his life with dignity after facing every hardship. As his wife and the mother of his children, it is extremely painful for our family to relive this trauma after 17 years.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Four-lane Construction:</strong> A new greenfield four-lane highway will be constructed between Bhopal and Mandsaur (Bhopal-Mandsaur greenfield four lane). This will pass through Ujjain and will be approximately 350 km long. This project will not only accelerate the development of the proposed Bhopal Metropolitan area but also ease travel between Ujjain and Indore. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav proposed this during a meeting with NHAI Chairman Santosh Yadav in Delhi on Friday.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the central and state governments will collaboratively resolve obstacles in ongoing and proposed road projects. Senior officials from NHAI and MPRDC were also present at the meeting. <p>The war between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing for the past 42 months, has inflicted significant damage on Ukraine. The Russian military continues to deliver blows to Ukraine, and on Thursday, dealt a major setback. Russia launched a drone attack on the Simferopol, the largest ship in the Ukrainian Navy. This attack resulted in the Ukrainian ship being destroyed and sinking in the river.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Attack by Maritime Drone</h2>



<p>Russia attacked the Ukrainian ship Simferopol in the Danube River delta in Odesa, Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that the attack was carried out by a maritime drone, marking the first successful drone attack, sinking a Ukrainian Navy ship.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Heavy Losses for the Ukrainian Navy</h2>



<p>According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the Simferopol was a medium-sized reconnaissance ship designed for radio, electronic, radar, and optical reconnaissance tasks. Launched in 2019 and commissioned into the Ukrainian Navy in 2021, its destruction and sinking in the Russian attack represent a significant loss for the Ukrainian Navy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Crew Member Killed, Several Injured</h2>



<p>The attack resulted in the death of one crew member and injuries to several others aboard the Simferopol. Ukrainian authorities have confirmed the attack. Russia claims the ship sank completely, a claim seemingly supported by video evidence. However, Ukraine has not explicitly confirmed this Russian claim.</p>


<p>The Russian military continues to deliver blows to Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Now, the Russian army has dealt another significant setback to Ukraine.</p>

<p><strong>Jaipur.</strong> The monsoon has once again gained momentum in Rajasthan. According to the Meteorological Department, the low-pressure area over Odisha-Chhattisgarh has weakened and is now active in Vidarbha and surrounding areas. Due to its effect, the monsoon trough line passes through Rajasthan via Bikaner and Kota, intensifying rainfall activities in the state.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rajasthan Weather Update 29 August</h2>



<p><strong>🔷</strong> Moderate rainfall is expected in most parts of eastern Rajasthan for the next 5-6 days, and heavy rainfall is expected in some parts of the southern and south-eastern regions.<br><strong>🔷</strong> Moderate rainfall is expected in some parts of Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions, excluding the border areas, for the next 4-5 days.</p>



<p>The Meteorological Department has issued a warning stating that moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is likely in parts of Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, and Jodhpur divisions on 29 August. Light to moderate rainfall will continue in most districts of eastern Rajasthan for the next five to six days. Heavy rainfall is also likely in some areas of the southern and south-eastern regions.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, the department has issued a major alert for 31 August. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Baran, Rajsamand, and Udaipur districts on this day. A heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for Banswara, Bharatpur, Bhilwara, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Dholpur, Dungarpur, Jhalawar, Karauli, Pratapgarh, Kota, Sawai Madhopur, and Sirohi districts.</p>
