<p>The death toll from the collapse of a portion of a four-storey illegal building (Ramabai Apartments Building Collapsed) in Vasai town, Palghar district, Maharashtra, has risen to 14. The tragic incident confirmed the deaths of 14 people, including a mother and daughter, with rescue operations continuing even 30 hours after the collapse. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade, and local police are present at the scene. Police have arrested the builder.</p>



<p>Officials stated that the rear portion of the Ramabai Apartment in Swami Samarth Nagar suddenly collapsed at around 12:05 am on Wednesday. Debris removal and rescue efforts have been ongoing since then. The district administration has confirmed that a total of 17 people have been extracted from the rubble so far: 14 dead, one critically injured, and two rescued safely. The relief operation is still underway.</p>

<p>Two NDRF teams are deployed at the site and are working with the local administration on relief efforts. Due to the densely populated area, heavy machinery could not reach the site on time, resulting in manual debris removal during the initial hours. Currently, work is underway at a war footing with the help of machinery.</p>



<p>The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has confirmed that the building was illegal. The building was constructed in 2012 and contained a total of 50 flats. The collapsed section included 12 flats. Following a complaint from the corporation, the police arrested the builder.</p>



<p>District Collector Indu Rani Jakhar stated that there is a possibility of more people being trapped under the rubble. As a precaution, all the surrounding chawls have been evacuated, and the remaining residents of Ramabai Apartment have been moved to safer locations.</p>

<p><strong>Trump Tariff:</strong> A 50% American tariff came into effect on India on Wednesday, August 27th, increasing difficulties for Indian exporters. Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council and White House advisor, has issued a direct threat, stating that President Trump&#8217;s stance will not soften unless India opens its markets to the US.</p>



<p>Hassett stated, &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a complicated relationship. Part of it is tied to efforts to put pressure on Russia,&#8221; adding that this is to achieve a peace agreement and save millions of lives. He reiterated his view that India has been inflexible in opening its market.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Path to Peace Partially Lies Through India: Navarro</h2>



<p>Peter Navarro, US diplomat and advisor to President Trump, also commented on India&#8217;s purchase of Russian oil. He claimed that India has fueled the war by buying Russian oil and that the US will take even stronger measures if India continues its current stance. In a media interview, he stated that the path to peace in the Russia-Ukraine war partially lies through India. He added that the American tariff could be easily reduced; a 25% reduction would occur if India stopped buying oil from Russia. He described Modi as a great leader and India as a large democracy run by very intelligent people.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Good Relationship Between Modi and Trump: Besant</h2>



<p>In an interview with Fox News, Besant stated that while the bilateral relationship between India and the US is complex, both countries will eventually come together. He said, “The recent unease in the relationship between New Delhi and Washington is not only due to the purchase of Russian oil, but also due to the delay in reaching a trade agreement. The relationship between India and the US is complex, but the personal relationship between PM Modi and President Trump is excellent. India initiated talks after the tariff policy announcement, but we haven&#8217;t reached any conclusion yet. Initially, I thought this trade deal would happen quickly.”</p>



<p>US Treasury Secretary Besant stated that India is the world&#8217;s largest democracy and the US is the world&#8217;s largest economy, adding that they will ultimately come together. He mentioned this point during negotiations regarding the tariff, stating that whenever there is a rift in bilateral trade relations, the country with the deficit benefits, while the country with the surplus is concerned. He highlighted that India is selling goods to the US, but high tariffs in India are resulting in a significant deficit for the US.</p>

<p><strong>IMD Heavy Rain Alert:</strong> Monsoon rains have intensified in the last week of August. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for several states across the country on 28, 29 and 30 August. Punjab, Jammu, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh have witnessed significant devastation due to this season&#8217;s rainfall. In Punjab, a farmer-built dam collapsed due to overflowing waters of the Beas river, destroying crops across hundreds of hectares.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Heavy Rainfall Likely in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab</h2>



<p>The IMD has forecast light rain in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh today, but no alert has been issued. However, heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. A heavy rain alert has also been issued for Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu. The heavy rainfall poses a high risk of landslides in the hilly states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.</p>



<p>On Thursday, the IMD issued an alert predicting heavy rainfall in Koraput and Malkangiri districts of Odisha. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in 28 districts of the state. The IMD stated that heavy rainfall will continue for the next three days due to the impact of a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rain Warning for Andhra Pradesh</h2>



<p>According to the IMD, Andhra Pradesh is expected to experience thunderstorms and winds gusting up to 30-40 km/h on 26 and 27 August. This could affect festival celebrations, particularly Vinayaka Chavithi, potentially altering the festive atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Yellow Alert for Rain in 12 Bihar Districts</h2>



<p>The monsoon has weakened in Bihar. No rainfall was recorded in any district in the past 24 hours, but the IMD has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts: Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, East Champaran, West Champaran, Siwan, and Gopalganj. The IMD has warned of potential wind speeds up to 40 km/h in these districts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Death Toll in Himachal Pradesh Exceeds 350</h2>



<p>The death toll due to monsoon-related incidents has risen to 379. Roads, bridges, and other infrastructure worth approximately ₹1400 crore have been damaged. 24 of the victims of a landslide near Vaishno Devi have been identified. Meanwhile, in Punjab, more than 18 trains have been cancelled due to heavy rainfall.</p>

<p><strong>Nagaur:</strong> A year-long unofficial halt on surveys conducted by the State Tax Department in Rajasthan has emboldened those involved in GST evasion. The absence of surveys and roadside checks has allowed businesses dealing in iron, cement, pan masala, gutkha, and other goods to openly evade taxes.</p>



<p>Consequently, the government is facing a daily loss of crores of rupees in revenue. Experts say that the cessation of surveys has led to a surge in Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Surveys are Conducted</h2>



<p>The State Tax Department identifies taxpayers with suspicious transactions. This involves scrutinising discrepancies in GST returns, errors in e-way bills, or acting on confidential information to select locations for on-site inspections. Previously, teams would arrive at the business premises without prior notice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Impact of the Halt</h2>



<p>Sources indicate that the suspension of surveys has resulted in revenue losses for the state government, impacting development projects and creating financial difficulties in managing healthcare and education expenditures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">₹82,964 Crore Revenue Loss in Three Years</h2>



<p>The total revenue loss over three years amounts to ₹82,964 crore. This significant revenue deficit is directly attributed to the department&#8217;s senior officials&#8217; policy of not conducting surveys. This signals a worrying trend for the state&#8217;s economic condition and tax collection system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Inspection Process</h2>



<p>The department selects locations and conducts campaigns on major trade routes, border areas, and markets. Inspections involve verifying documents such as e-way bills and tax invoices for goods transported in vehicles. The driver is questioned, and the goods and documents are cross-checked.</p>

<p><strong>Udaipur:</strong> The Udaipur Development Authority (UDA) will be handing over community centres in Balicha and Bargaon to private entities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for a period of five years. Simultaneously, 1109 residential plots in Kaladwas, South Extension Scheme, and Nohra village will be auctioned. Several crore rupees worth of development projects are planned across various areas of the city.</p>



<p>These decisions were taken at a UDA executive committee meeting on Wednesday. The meeting, chaired by Commissioner Rahul Jain, was attended by UDA Secretary Hemendra Nagar, Shaitan Singh (Public Health Engineering Department), Indra Raj Meena (Electricity Corporation), Munim Chandra Meena (PWD), Sanjeev Sharma (Director Engineering Secretary), Deputy Commissioner Bindubala, Shankar Singh Devda (Director Law), Anupam Sharma (Planning), Dr. Khushboo Ameta (Finance), and Engineer Anit Mathur.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Community Centres under PPP Model</h2>



<p>-Community centres in Balicha and Bargaon have been approved for a 5-year PPP model, with a 10% annual increase in fees.<br>-Balicha: ₹27.24 lakh per year, GST ₹4.90 lakh – Total ₹32.14 lakh<br>-Bargaon: ₹12.60 lakh per year, GST ₹2.26 lakh – Total ₹14.86 lakh</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Approval for Development Works Exceeding ₹50 Crore</h2>



<p>-Administrative and financial approval of ₹23.15 crore for 10 projects.<br>-Work orders issued for 12 projects worth ₹28.70 crore.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Road Repairs and Reconstruction</h2>



<p>In the Dholi Magri-Bedwas area, due to the laying of water and gas pipelines in Nakoda Nagar I, II, III, and Saubhagya Nagar, Gayatri Nagar, road work worth ₹772.19 lakh will be undertaken. The tender process will be completed soon, and work will commence shortly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">₹96.67 Crore Sewerage Project in Navratan Area</h2>



<p>As per the decision taken under the Chief Minister&#8217;s Budget Announcement 2025-26, a sewerage line will be laid across approximately 45 km in the Navratan and New Navratan areas. Following the approval of ₹96.67 crore, work will begin soon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Plot Allocation through Lottery</h2>



<p>Residential plots in Kaladwas, South Extension Scheme, and Nohra will be auctioned. This includes 311 plots in the Kaladwas residential scheme, 550 plots in the South Extension Sector-A scheme, and 248 plots in the Rajaswa Gram Nohra scheme. Allocation will be done through a lottery system under the Rajasthan Urban Land Disposal Rules 1974. Remaining plots will be sold through e-auction.</p>

<p><strong>MPPSC exam update:</strong> The recruitment calendar of the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) has been repeatedly delayed. Several exams have been held, but interviews for them have not taken place, while many recruitments are stuck due to legal disputes or administrative reasons. Although the Commission continues to conduct exams and interviews, the backlog of pending recruitments has grown so much that candidates may now have to wait until 2026. Candidates say the delays have left their careers hanging in the balance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Recruitment-2022: Interviews for 450 Assistant Professor posts incomplete</h2>



<p>This recruitment was announced in November 2022 for 1669 posts. The exam was held in 2023, and the results were declared in early 2024. However, the interview process for four subjects is still incomplete. This involves more than 450 posts. The commission says that the interviews for these remaining subjects will be conducted first. This clearly indicates that the entire recruitment process will stretch for about 4 years. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Assistant Professor Recruitment – 2024: Process stalled for 1928 posts</h2>



<p>In 2024, the commission advertised for the recruitment (Assistant Professor Recruitment 2024) of Assistant Professors for a total of 1928 posts in 23 subjects. The exam results have also been released, but the interview process has not yet started. The commission has clarified that work on the 2024 recruitment will only begin after the 2022 recruitment is completed. This means that the interviews for this recruitment are likely to begin at the end of 2025 or in 2026.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Candidates say – Unable to make alternative plans</h2>



<p>Candidates are most distressed by the constantly dragging process. They say they are unable to plan further studies or alternative careers. The overlap of several exams at the same time and legal hurdles are lengthening this wait. Many candidates say that now more time is spent waiting for results and interviews than on preparation. Now, after the completion of the legal process, the revised result of the preliminary exam will be released, followed by the mains and then the interviews. <p>Besides these, several other recruitment exams are pending. The recruitment exams for Mining Officer, Dental Surgeon, Librarian, Sports Officer, Assistant Manager, and Transport Sub-Inspector have been completed or are in progress, but their interviews also seem likely only in the next year, i.e., 2026. MPPSC officials say they understand the pressure and are completing the pending processes one by one.</p>

<p><strong>Bihar Weather</strong> The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for 15 districts of Bihar. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in these districts in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, the sky will remain clear in 26 districts. Clear weather may lead to people experiencing mugginess and heat. The temperature in these districts may increase by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the state&#8217;s weather may change again from August 28. Heavy rain may occur again in several districts.</p>

<p>According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain in 15 districts of Bihar from Wednesday to Thursday morning. An alert has also been issued regarding lightning.
