<p>Ukraine&#8217;s parliament recently passed a new anti-corruption law. This law increases government oversight of anti-corruption bodies such as the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor&#8217;s Office (SAPO). This law is the subject of the protests. People allege that it will undermine the independence of these institutions and that Zelenskyy is using it to protect his associates from corruption investigations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Zelenskyy Called a Dictator and Demon</h2>



<p>Thousands have taken to the streets in several cities to protest the new anti-corruption law. Demonstrators are demanding that Zelenskyy veto the law. <p>The Vande Bharat train has become a popular choice for passengers due to its comfort and speed. While capable of reaching 180 kilometres per hour, it rarely operates at its full speed. This prompted a question in Parliament regarding the reasons behind this.</p>



<p>Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw responded to the query.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Maximum Speed of Vande Bharat</h2>



<p>In a written reply, the Railway Minister stated that although the Vande Bharat train is designed to run at 180 kilometres per hour, its current maximum operational speed is 160 kilometres per hour. Several factors contribute to this. The Minister explained that a train&#8217;s speed depends on track infrastructure, maintenance, and the route, including the distance to the next station.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Railway Track Upgrades</h2>



<p>He further added that significant work has been undertaken in the last 10 years to upgrade railway tracks and increase train speeds. Track speeds have improved considerably, with over 78% of tracks in the country now upgraded to handle speeds of 110 km/h or more.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rajya Sabha Member&#8217;s Question</h2>



<p>Rajya Sabha MP Fauzia Khan (फौजिया खान) raised the issue of Vande Bharat&#8217;s speed with the Railway Minister. She pointed out that the average speed of Vande Bharat trains decreased from 84.48 km/h in 2020-21 to 76.25 km/h in 2023-24, and asked if the government was aware of this. The Railway Minister provided a detailed response to this question, also mentioning ongoing track upgrades to further increase speeds.</p>



<p>It is noteworthy that the Vande Bharat train service was launched in 2019. Currently, a total of 140 Vande Bharat trains are operational across various routes in the country, with plans to launch more routes in the future.</p>

<p>Chennai police received an anonymous call early this morning claiming a bomb had been planted at the Alwarpet residence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The call triggered a major security alert.</p>



<p>A bomb disposal squad and a sniffer dog unit were immediately dispatched to the Chief Minister&#8217;s official residence. A thorough search of the entire premises was conducted.</p>



<p>Authorities searched every corner of the house and its surrounding area. After more than an hour of searching, police declared the bomb threat a hoax. No explosives or suspicious items were found on the premises.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Team Investigating the Caller</h2>



<p>Authorities are now working to identify the individual who made the bomb threat call. The call was reportedly made from a mobile phone. Efforts are underway to trace the number and identify the caller.</p>



<p>Senior police officials have confirmed that the incident is being taken seriously. Appropriate legal action will be taken against the individual who attempted to create panic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cyber Team Involved in Investigation</h2>



<p>Cyber and technical teams have been roped in to assist in the investigation. This is not the first time Tamil Nadu has received such false bomb threats.</p>



<p>Over the past year, several prominent locations have received hoax bomb threats, often necessitating evacuations and heightened security measures.</p>



<p>In April 2023, several schools in Chennai and Coimbatore received emails warning of planted bombs, which turned out to be false. In early 2024, a threatening call targeting the Madras High Court complex led to a temporary lockdown of the area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Security Experts Issue Warning</h2>



<p>Security experts have warned that frequent hoax calls can weaken emergency response systems and drain valuable public resources.</p>



<p>Police have appealed to the public to refrain from such pranks and stressed that stringent legal action will be taken against those found guilty.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cause of the Stampede</h2>



<p>Media reports suggest that a fallen power line caused the stampede. The ongoing Kanwar Yatra during the month of Sawan has resulted in large crowds at Haridwar&#8217;s temples, with devotees making significant efforts to offer water at the shrines.</p>



<p>On Sunday, a large number of devotees arrived at the Mansa Devi Temple to offer water. While ascending the temple&#8217;s uphill path in heavy rain, a power line fell, causing panic and a stampede that led to six fatalities. The temple premises have been cleared, and injured devotees are being transported to the district hospital.</p>



<p>SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal, speaking on the stampede in Haridwar that claimed 6 lives, said:<br><em>&#8216;We had received information that some people were injured, after which the police took immediate action. Around 35 people were brought to the hospital. Out of these, the deaths of 6 people have been confirmed. The rest are undergoing treatment&#8230; Prima facie, the stampede occurred due to a rumor that an electric shock had occurred on the steps about 100 meters down from the temple route. We are investigating the matter further..</em>&#8220;.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CM Expresses Grief</h2>



<p>Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident. He wrote on the social media platform X, <em>&#8220;Received the extremely saddening news of a stampede on the Mansa Devi temple route in Haridwar. The local police and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am in constant touch with the local administration regarding this matter and am continuously monitoring the situation. I pray to Mata Rani for the safety and well-being of all the devotees.&#8221;</em></p>

<p><strong>Boeing Plane Engine Failure:</strong> An American Airlines Boeing plane experienced an engine failure and a fire in its landing gear, putting 179 passengers at risk. The sudden fire on board caused panic among the passengers. An American Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 was preparing for takeoff from Denver International Airport when flames erupted from its wheels. The pilot and cabin crew acted swiftly, evacuating passengers through the emergency exits.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Engine Failure Believed to be the Main Cause</h2>



<p>One passenger sustained injuries during the rescue operation. The aircraft has been sent for investigation following the incident. The flight was scheduled to depart from Denver International Airport on 26 July for Miami, but an emergency landing had to be performed during takeoff. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the sudden fire in the landing gear. Preliminary investigations suggest engine failure as the primary cause.</p>



<p>Videos of the incident are circulating on social media. Airport staff and local firefighters brought the fire under control. Viral videos show passengers jumping from the emergency exits of the plane on the runway amidst flames and thick smoke.</p>

Coaching Rules: SC and High Court Tough on Student Safety, Guidelines Must Be Followed Within 2 Months


<p><strong>Jaipur:</strong> The Supreme Court has directed all states and union territories to implement regulations for coaching centres within two months. These regulations will mandate registration, student protection, and a grievance redressal mechanism. The court also ordered the formation of district-level monitoring committees, headed by the Collector, to enforce these regulations, conduct inspections, and oversee complaints.</p>



<p>Addressing the issue of student suicides, the court instructed all educational institutions to adopt and implement a uniform mental health policy to prevent suicides. Furthermore, the central government must submit an affidavit within 90 days detailing compliance with the regulations, coordination with states, the monitoring mechanism, and the timeline for the report of the national task force on student mental health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strict Enforcement</h2>



<p>Meanwhile, the Rajasthan High Court directed the state government to strictly enforce the central government&#8217;s guidelines and the provisions of the Indian Penal Code until a law is enacted. Coaching institutions have also been asked to provide information on the steps taken to prevent student suicides. A division bench comprising Justices Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Chandraprakash Shrimali issued this order on Friday on a suo moto public interest litigation. The next hearing will be held after three weeks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Publicly Display on Website and Notice Board</h2>



<p>All educational institutions should adopt a uniform mental health policy to prevent suicides, which will be updated annually. This policy must be publicly displayed on the institution&#8217;s website and notice board.</p>



<p>All educational institutions with 100 or more students must employ at least one qualified counsellor, psychologist, or social worker. Institutions with fewer students should also make arrangements for counselling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Essential Guidelines to Follow</h2>



<p>&#8211; Provide counsellors in proportion to the number of students.<br>&#8211; Avoid public shaming or humiliation based on student performance.<br>&#8211; Establish a helpline for mental health and suicide prevention.<br>&#8211; Provide training to all teaching and non-teaching staff from counsellors at least twice a year.<br>&#8211; Establish a mechanism for reporting incidents including sexual harassment, ragging, and bullying.<br>&#8211; Failure to take timely action will render the institution liable.<br>&#8211; Institutions should also organise seminars etc. for parents regarding students&#8217; mental health, so that they do not put undue pressure on their children.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Further Important Instructions</h2>



<p>&#8211; Maintain records of awareness activities and submit annual reports to the Department of Education, UGC, AICTE, and CBSE regulatory authorities.<br>&#8211; Increase non-academic activities, including sports. Regularly review the examination pattern.<br>&#8211; All educational institutions, including coaching centres and training institutes, should provide career counselling.<br>&#8211; Residential educational institutions should be free from harassment, bullying, and drugs.<br>&#8211; All residential institutions should implement safety mechanisms on rooftops, balconies, and other areas.<br>&#8211; The Rajasthan High Court has instructed the state government to implement central guidelines until a law is enacted.</p>

<p><strong>IMD Red Alert:</strong> India continues to experience heavy rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan regions of Maharashtra, and Goa. An orange alert has been issued for Odisha, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and eastern parts of Rajasthan. People have been advised to remain vigilant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Low Pressure Building in Bay of Bengal</h2>



<p>The IMD stated that a low-pressure area is forming over the Bay of Bengal. This is expected to reach the plains of West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand within the next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in these areas today and tomorrow. The department also reported that rainfall continues in Himachal Pradesh. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), approximately 221 roads, 36 electricity transformers, and 152 water supply schemes remained closed in the state until Friday evening.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Alert for 25 Districts in Bihar</h2>



<p>The meteorological department reported that heavy rainfall continued in Madhya Pradesh on Friday. Singrauli recorded 7 inches of rainfall. Consequently, the administration declared a school holiday in Singrauli. The monsoon has reactivated in Bihar. The Patna-based meteorological department issued an alert for 25 districts in the state today. The department stated that heavy rainfall occurred on Friday in 20 districts, including Patna, Siwan, Aurangabad, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Banka, Hajipur, Nawada, Begusarai, and Samastipur.</p>

Arshad Nadeem Undergoes Calf Surgery


<p>Pakistan&#8217;s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem has undergone surgery on his calf muscle, casting doubt on the much-anticipated javelin throw contest against Neeraj Chopra at the Silesia Diamond League 2025 next month. The 27-year-old is understood to have opted for surgery now with an eye on the upcoming World Championships.</p>



<p>The Paris 2024 Olympic men&#8217;s javelin gold medallist recently underwent an interventional surgery on his right calf at Spire Hospital, Cambridge, by Dr Ali Bajwa. Nadeem is currently undergoing recovery in London. The Silesia Diamond League in Poland on August 16 was expected to see the first clash between these two stars from India and Pakistan since their historic encounter at Paris 2024, where Nadeem won gold with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m. Tokyo 2020 champion Neeraj Chopra had to settle for silver.</p>



<p>Nadeem&#8217;s coach, Salman Butt, explained that the 27-year-old opted for surgery now keeping the upcoming World Championships in mind. Salman Butt told PTI, “He (Nadeem) is focusing more on preparing for the World Championships in Tokyo in September, so he decided to have surgery on his calf muscle, which had been bothering him for some time. I don&#8217;t think they (Neeraj and Nadeem) will compete against each other until the World event.”</p>

<p>The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is now in its third day, and the fighting continues. Soldiers from both countries are attacking each other. So far, 33 people have died in the conflict: 20 in Thailand (including one soldier and 19 civilians), and 13 in Cambodia (including 5 soldiers and 8 civilians). Approximately 130 people have been injured in total.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mass Displacement of Civilians</h2>



<p>The conflict has caused mass displacement. Around 130,000 people in Thailand near the border have fled their homes to safer locations. Over 300 shelters have been set up for them. Similarly, approximately 35,000 people in Cambodia have been displaced from their homes near the border.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cambodia Calls for a Ceasefire</h2>



<p>In light of the escalating conflict, Cambodia has called for a ceasefire. Cambodia&#8217;s representative at the United Nations (UN) has stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire. The Thai army had previously attempted to de-escalate tensions through talks with the Cambodian army, but these efforts failed, and the fighting continued.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Does Cambodia Want a Ceasefire?</h2>



<p>Without a ceasefire, the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is likely to escalate further. Cambodia is aware that its military is unlikely to withstand a prolonged conflict against Thailand&#8217;s superior military strength.</p>

<p><strong>UGC NET Result 2025:</strong> The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially declared the results for the UGC NET June 2025 examination. Candidates who appeared for the exam can now check their results on the NTA website, <a href="https://ugcnet.nta.ac.in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ugcnet.nta.ac.in</a>. The exam was conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT) from 18 to 21 June 2025 at various examination centres across the country.</p>



<p>A total of 10,19,751 candidates registered for the exam this year, out of which 7,52,007 candidates appeared. The exam determines eligibility for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) positions in universities and colleges across the nation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">UGC NET Result 2025: How many candidates were successful?</h2>



<p>5,269 candidates qualified for both JRF and Assistant Professor. 54,885 candidates qualified for Assistant Professor only. 1,28,179 candidates have been deemed eligible for PhD admission only.</p>
